Artist / Designer

1982

Born and raised in Upstate New York, Sean Augustine March is a self-taught artist and 3D designer. March began his approach and first experiments with glass in 2010 with some first attempts to repurpose discarded mirrors.  The versatility of the material, and its visible interaction with light, inspired him to focus exclusively on his sculptural work starting in 2013. Working primarily with dichroic glass, March takes advantage of light as a sculptural material and explores how it affects viewers’ perception. As light passes through the dichroic glass´ embedded metal particles, it reflects colors spanning the entire visible spectrum. March meticulously plans each work with a subtle minimalistic approach that highlights these vibrant optical effects.  As a result, he creates elaborate and striking landscapes of light and reflection, exploring along the way new optical effects of glass and phenomenological theories.

March currently lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. His art and designs have been featured in MoMA design store, Domino, New Glass Review 38, ABC Carpet & Home, Vogue, InStyle, WWD, Glamour, and Wired.

"For over a decade, I have been exploring the interactions between light and glass, fascinated by phenomena such as thin-film interference and the infinity effect. My primary medium is dichroic glass, a type of glass with dozens of microscopic layers that bend light into a vibrant spectrum of color. Each layer is only a few microns thick, and bend light in a similar fashion to the surface of a bubble. I am drawn to creating visually striking forms that also challenge perception, blurring the line between reality and illusion. My goal is to create works that express an otherworldly appearance, so uncanny and vibrant in the real world, that they look unreal."
